Your Rights as a Victim

Under the Illinois Rights of Crime Victims and Witnesses Act (725 ILCS 120), you have the right to:

  • Be treated with fairness and respect for your dignity and privacy throughout the criminal justice process
  • Be notified of court proceedings and the status of the case
  • Communicate with the prosecution and have your views considered
  • Be informed of the conviction, sentence, imprisonment, and release of the accused
  • Seek restitution and apply for crime victim compensation
  • Be provided with a safe waiting area during court proceedings
  • Have your employer notified if your attendance at court proceedings is necessary
